U16B - Competition is thick, diverse and talented

What can we say? This age bracket attracts a lot of attention and several teams have very different rosters going into Fall 2014.

Better than ever.

Region 1 at this age bracket offers a lot of talent at the top of the rankings.
U16 Boys soccer is where the action is.

I disagree with you on that point. I have seen college scouts at Shore Conference games looking at selected players. They probably noticed them at club events first. It gives them some perspective on how players perform when everyone isn't the same age and size. The overall soccer isn't as good, but depending on the teams, the athleticism and physicality is better. The game gets rougher once you get out of the U## system. In my opinion.

Anonymous said...

While you may find an occurrence where a local college showed up to see a HS game the larger point is correct. By and large, Colleges don't use HS games when they are looking at players. Get your kid to the top flights of the right tournaments and go to camps. That's your best chance.

Anonymous said...

What teams in NJ are there that are pass the U18 category? Just curious to know since my son, most likely, will play beyond that.

Anonymous said...

GotSoccer has a U19 category - if you just sort New Jersey - there are a small number of teams - maybe 30 or so. Don't know about after that age. But once they get to college age it is tough to get them together for any meaningful play.

Anonymous said...

EDP Cup flights, have they been released? I cant find them.

Anonymous said...

Edp Cup schedule posted. Visit their site, flights/schedule right there.

Anonymous said...

60 minute games??

Anonymous said...

Should be 70 minutes!!!!

Anonymous said...

60 minute games are a joke

Anonymous said...

EVERYONE write into the EDP Cup organizer and demand a change. Only way change will happen is when the consumer stops buying a subpar product.

Anonymous said...

certainly hurts teams with big rosters. Shouldnt a showcase have enough time to do just that? SHOWCASE

Anonymous said...

EDP is following FIFA ethics. Shame.

Anonymous said...

8 yr olds w/ 8 player rosters play 60 minute games. Joke. Who do we complain to at EDP?

Anonymous said...

Good luck getting a change, it would mean getting lights. The last games start after 7pm as it is.

Anonymous said...

Club coaches and mangers should complain. Nothing will change this year but EDP will know this is not acceptable and maybe it will change in the future. EDP is charging a lot for this and it's not fair to their customers.

Anonymous said...

Is this really true? Are they really 1 hour games? seriously a joke if so.

Anonymous said...

How many minutes do you want your kid to play? Most will play 180 minutes, some will play 240 over the weekend. That's two full games for some and almost three for others. In most cases the kids will play 2/3 full games in less than 36 hours. Get your heads out of your asses!! I don't buy into most academy rules, but the one game and occasionally two a week rule works. These are 15-17 year old boys for the most part looking to play college soccer. Do you seriously think a kid playing the 115th minute of soccer is at his peak and is going to show well for the coach that happens to see him at that moment? Go play 60 minutes, stop for 3 hours (cool down). Then warm up again and play another 60 minutes. Oh yeah and do it again the next day. Get a grip!! I understand that a 60 minute game can sometimes balance the playing field in favor of a lesser team, but oh well. At this age we have to start separating winning games from getting your kids exposure. At this point ill take a healthy, rested player over winning games any day of the week.

Anonymous said...

Okay, Mr. EDP. Teams can bring guests and spread out more playing time than normal to the subs. 60 minutes is flat out too short.

Anonymous said...

I think that the priority for most coaches is winning (parents and players also) not show casing their players, They'll play exhausted starters whether it's a 60 min. game or a 70 min game.

Anonymous said...

Some games it takes 20 minutes for a kid to get into the flow of the game or even get more than a touch or 2 on the ball. That's 1/3 of the game.

80 minute games for U16-U18 is appropriate. 10 minutes less would be tolerated. 20 less is outrageous.

60 minute games does more damage to the boys mental health than 80 minutes does to their physical health. No question.

Anonymous said...

We will see how quickly EDP administrator change the rules back if the majority of teams boycott the tournament.

Anonymous said...

NYC Cup is a showcase.

Each team is guaranteed 3x 80 minute games.

BOOM. Drops the mic on EDP Cup.

Anonymous said...

Marlton 2 Stronghold 1 in EDP play today. Good state cup Final rematch.

Anonymous said...

How were the Stronhold parents behaving?

Anonymous said...

Mainly ok. A couple ugly comments by the 2 men. They are like the 2 old guys in the balcony at the muppets

Anonymous said...

How about the stronghold dad coach who barks at opposing players?

Anonymous said...

Was the game at Stronghold?

Anonymous said...

Game was at Marlton.

Call them. Tell them your thoughts and let us know what they say. You have an issue stop butching and do something about it

Anonymous said...

EDP heard your complaints and will revise to 70 minute matches.

Yeah, right.

Anonymous said...

The comment was removed about EDP being greedy. Funny. EDP has become a huge machine with a monopoly. Will this post be removed?

Anonymous said...

60 minutes is not a good soccer decision but may be a good business decision. Where else you going?

Anonymous said...

Exactly! Monopoly! The D in EDP is for development. Now it's just a business.

Anonymous said...

Anyone have any thoughts on super u league for this age group?

Anonymous said...

Don't you mean Super Why?

Anonymous said...

Funny how my comment was removed about the EDP sham. $1,100 registration per team, for three 60 minute games, and maybe a fourth. That's almost unbelievable. Again where is all the money going? Is EDP a non profit or a for profit organization? That's a legit question. Cool, we have our own version of FIFA right here.

Anonymous said...

If you have 18 on a team, that comes out to 20 per player per game. That includes fields/refs/medical care.

Anonymous said...

Super Y

Anonymous said...

LOl. 9 flights at U 16 age. It's all about EDP making money. Showcase tournament. How many college coaches do you think are coming to watch the bottom half of 9 flights, especially when their time is so limited? It's laughable. The reason it's 60 minutes is to jam as many teams paying $1100 in as they can, nothing more. Rationalize all you want but it's insane.

Anonymous said...

It's difficult to get 18 players into a 60 min game.

Anonymous said...

No, it is impossible to get 18 players meaningful minutes in a 60 minute game. God forbid someone should get hurt, no added time at all.

Anonymous said...

Boycott EDP future tournaments if they are going to proceed with the unimaginable American created rules of freaking 30 minute halves. By the way parents, keep an eye open to see if college coaches are present. Most likely only one may be walking around.

Anonymous said...

Accept only the top teams in each age group and make the games 40 minutes. EDP cup just wants everyone's money. No need for lights if there's only a certain amount of teams. Plus they have so many other fields they don't use at tuckahoe. This is a showcase for top teams. The coaches are going to be at these top games anyway. Mine as well make them longer so the kids get more looks in front of the coaches. Like someone said before 60 minutes is a joke. EDP needs to change something but we all know they won't.

Anonymous said...

Any top EDP teams still holding tryouts?

Anonymous said...

Why complain only about EDP, check out the so called Embassy Cup. Organized by Bethesda Soccer Club, to be held on Father's Day weekend. That, is a joke. Everyone is in this to make money.

Anonymous said...

That's a new one and at least they are trying. Different scenario I think.

Anonymous said...

What's going on with SDFC at EDP cup they lost both games yesterday?

Anonymous said...

I saw their game against YMS and that and that team is big, mean, and physical. They just bullied SDFC off the ball.

Anonymous said...

Hahaha Marlboro is so bad

Anonymous said...

Keep the coaches, fire the kids. Sounds like a plan!

Anonymous said...

Since everyone was a flop at this paseds weekends EDP cup no one speaking up today hun!!! I guess the top 5/6 whatever you guys call yourselves, did not play like a top 5/6.

Anonymous said...

That's correct. It was a bad weekend.

Anonymous said...

Weekends are made bad by poor coaching. Why would any coach not start and sparingly play the most talented player on a team? Why would a coach carry players that he has no intention of playing and when he does he knows that they are not up to the same level as the others? Why would anyone believe that college coaches really go to a showcase when all they have to do is look at the empty coaches only car lot? Why would any coach register for a showcase that allows for a 60 minute game? The reality is that some players are realistically attempting to get into college and play soccer while most others think this will just come to them. Is your coach contacting college coaches for you? Is your coach reaching out to those in attendance? Is it part of what he does or is it a burden? How many teams were in attendance at a showcase this past weekend? They all have these issues and if you don't you are VERY lucky.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm, angry post.

Anonymous said...

Very few college coaches attend these showcase tournaments. And if they do, they all see the same handful of players and nothing comes of it. Complete waste

Anonymous said...

That may be your point of view and I do feel there should be more at the showcases but I know my son has received quite a few contacts from playing at these showcases. I dont know if he will attend any of these schools but he has emails with specific moments of matches so they must be there. Maybe you play at a low level? Maybe you play at a high level but are not getting noticed because of your play? Maybe they just had their back turned when you scored or made a good defensive play?

Anonymous said...

Maybe your son is so awesome that everyone notices him!

Anonymous said...

Even if that is so you just confirmed that if you are worth being watched you will be

Anonymous said...

Put yourselves in coaches shoes...seriously, do you think they have the time to watch mediocrasy players? They are interested in the high caliber players. If your child is not high caliber, don't waste your time filming them. Accept the fact that they are not first division players and are not scholarship category. I have.

Anonymous said...

90% of all NCAA DI - DIII soccer players are not high caliber players, so not sure what the comment above is getting at. There is not a single NCAA player on the entire U-20 USA men's national team. Not one. So that tells you about the caliber of college soccer. Can't even put one player on the national team.

Anonymous said...

Not concerned about my kid not making national team. Just want soccer to help him get into a high quality college. That's the end game.

Anonymous said...

The national team players should do well in life without a degree. Soccer pays so well in th US

Anonymous said...

The team referenced in 3:48 is shlock. Nothing more. Nothing less. Shlock.

Anonymous said...

MF wins EDP league. 3-2 win over SDFC last night.

Anonymous said...

Good job MF. MF did show they are the best in this tough EDP division but surprisingly MF although better was not much better as they are an academy team.

Anonymous said...

You see goal differential?

Anonymous said...

7.34
I don't know what you mean. There's no team mentioned.

Anonymous said...

I do see the goals for and against. MF is the best team, in my opinion. Just thought that when I saw them I would be wowed, and I really was not.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure MF is the team with the pompous dad who says his son gets contacted by "quite a few" college coaches while putting down other people's children.

Anonymous said...

I object! Speculation, your honor.

Anonymous said...

Where did he/she put down anyone? If the facts disturb you then tell your son to be better.

Anonymous said...

Good job MF on State Cup and EDP. Excellent team

You don't consider mocking a boy putting him down? Classy. You must be an MF parent too!

Anonymous said...

If you think 12:01 was mocking someone then you have some real thin skin or you are just upset because you are finally coming to the realization that this soccer stuff all has an end date.

Anonymous said...

Twist it anyway you like. It's somebody making a mean spirited comment and hiding behind anonymous.

Anonymous said...

Pathetic that you feel that way.

Anonymous said...

3 NJ teams in the nations top 5 on got soccer, good job NJ!! Great accomplishment for the boys and the coaches!

Anonymous said...

NJ is very good competition. Not a surprise here.

Anonymous said...

I agree that NJ has good teams but in last weekends EDP tournament, Pa and NY won the top flights.

Anonymous said...

There was only one top flight (9 flights) and yes a team from NY won it. What's your point?

Anonymous said...

EDP Cup U16 Boys top flight was won by a team from Connecticut. They beat a team from Delaware in the finals. We played the Connecticut team today, lost by 1 goal, good team but beatable. Was a good experience playing them, well mannered kids, parents and coach.

Anonymous said...

5:19
The point is that NJ has good teams but no NJ teams dominated play in this tournament in top flights, not just the top one. Other states have good teams too.

Anonymous said...

It's been a good run for Match Fit so far, but all of that is going to come to an end. They're going to get schooled in West Virginia. Best of luck Match Fit, you're going to need it.

Anonymous said...

Why would you think that? Marlboro did well in regionals last year and MF is better

Anonymous said...

Why everyone mad about this MF team. They are just good

Anonymous said...

7:01 Have you seen the regionals schedule? What team is going to give Match Fit a hard time?

Anonymous said...

The team from Pennsylvania in their group, and if they are lucky enough to make it out of their group, whatever team waits for them in the semi's.

Anonymous said...

sounds like somebody got cut... enjoy your weekend playing video games.

Amazing how you have this blog figured out. You know exactly who is posting what... Your theories probably reveal more about you than you are willing to admit.

Anonymous said...

not a theory. Either an idiot posted it or someone looking for praise posted it. Either way it does reveal a lot about me, I have common sense.

Anonymous said...

Really? I just hear anger and cynicism.

Anonymous said...

So you believe that MF has not chance and will get schooled in regionals? If so you too are not too bright.

Anonymous said...

I am a well informed neutral and will tell you how Regionsls will go.
Group A - Penn Fusion wins the toughest group because Arlington can beat any of these 16 teams on any given day.
Group B - Baltimore Celtic will destroy this group as would the top 3 teams in PA, MD or VA. (The Marlboro group of last year)
Group C - Match Fit's only competition is Arsenal (big and physical), but it's not enough. MF will easily win the other 2 games.
Group D - Loudoun wins easily, but NYand DE will make them earn it... probably the most balanced group, but Loudoun clearly the class.

Semifinal matches include 4 teams that could all make noise at Nationals and get to a final. I am confident about the groups, but this is TOUGH!
Semi #1 - PF v Loudoun (both teams already punched a ticket to Tulsa for Nationals via National League) I'll pick Loudoun in a 1-0 game pitting some of the best coached teams around.
Semi #2 - Celtic v MF (neither qualified for Nationals so a lot to play for) I'll take Celtic in a 2-1 battle.
Final - Celtic v Loudoun (both now qualified for Nationals) Loudouns D and keeper (UVA committ) are the difference in a 1-0 win.

That will put SDFC, Loudoun, PF and Celtic at Nationals - a testament to the quality of Region 1 soccer.
That is all.

Anonymous said...

MF and Celtic are both high scoring teams, it will be a tough battle and a wonderful game if they do end up playing eachother

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the info, I know some parents are taking their sons there to tryout now.

Anonymous said...

Tryout where now?

Anonymous said...

If Matchfit plays Celtic, they will lose. Matchfit has proved That they struggle against top tier teams, such as 1v1 soccer from Canada.

Anonymous said...

True. One game is a history. Lol

Anonymous said...

So is SDFC and Stronghold not top tier? They may take offense to that haha

Anonymous said...

Definitely not at this moment! They know it too.

Anonymous said...

MF lost to more teams then 1v1, how about YMS, Marlton, Marlboro, STA? They also win a lot more then they lose. MF will do just fine at Regionals while everyone else is at the beach.

Anonymous said...

Good luck MF. All things considered, and having gone to a regional in the past, I would rather be at the beach. LOL.

Anonymous said...

Thanks! You're probably right!!

Anonymous said...

MatchFit wins 2-0 against PA West in it's first regional game!

Anonymous said...

One down!!

Anonymous said...

New day. New challenge. Prepare perform perfect

Anonymous said...

You are right, we can't win

Anonymous said...

You're awesome MF. Please keep us all updated. Good luck!

Anonymous said...

Matchfit wins the second game against Massachusetts team 3-2 and are now through to the semi finals.

Anonymous said...

tough competition so far...PA West -- they're barely top 20 in Region 1. And a Mass team? MA is almost the worst on the east coast...just ahead of NH, VT and ME. But credit to you...you won. Let us know when you beat some real footballers.

Anonymous said...

Pathetic post above. Sitting in nj

Anonymous said...

10:45, classic knucklehead who is doomed to spend his life rooting against other teams rather than for his own. Let me guess, you are an Eagles fan too.

Anonymous said...

So I guess there are no good football teams here in NJ. Please don't tell all of the college coaches that are watching our games!

Anonymous said...

There's good and there's very good.
MF good.
Celtic very good.
Sorry, but you're done tomorrow MF

Anonymous said...

If you believe the got soccer rankings, MF is the better team.

Anonymous said...

Giant fan actually. Still doesn't change the facts

Anonymous said...

What do you do when your not living vicariously through kids from other states?

Anonymous said...

What do you mean? Nobody said anything about kids from other states or are you trying to say everyone in NJ should be rooting for MF? Maybe everyone would if you were a little more down to earth!

Anonymous said...

What have I said that is not down to earth? I am just commenting on you. Apparently I hit a nerve! I apologize.

Anonymous said...

Another year, another NJ team advances to semis but just comes up short. Good try MF.

Anonymous said...

Great effort MF and outstanding season. Must have been a tough game. Would have liked to see you advance to Nationals. Regionals is a tough tournament.

Anonymous said...

MF bites the dust of Celtic, not enough quality players. Thats why they are recruiting.

Anonymous said...

Getting to the semis is not what you wanted I am sure. Still a very good accomplishment. However, you profess to have major college players on your team and more than a few. Maybe you should have advanced a bit more.

Anonymous said...

There were at least a dozen college coaches watching the semifinal of the regionals. How many were watching you or your kid playing FIFA? That game could have gone either way. It was won on a penalty kick for a handball in overtime. Good luck, Celtics!

Anonymous said...

That sucks, feel bad for that kid he will unfortunately never forget it.

Anonymous said...

It was tough, but he will be fine. He also saved a goal earlier in the game.

Anonymous said...

Good, I hope he remembers that.

Anonymous said...

Hey 1:03, Celtic has 3 kids who have already committed and a bunch more that will be playing in college. No shame in losing a great game to those guys (no way a good ref makes that call). Should be a great final tomorrow between them and Penn Fusion. Have to admit, not too upset about not going to Tulsa.

Anonymous said...

1:02. No need for us to recruit, plenty of kids looking to come.

Anonymous said...

You don't recruit? Is that what you are saying? I don't care if you do, everyone does, just don't hide from it.

Anonymous said...

Nobody is hiding anything. If everyone does it then why does 1:02 seem to take exception to it? It is not the first time this "recruiting" issue has been mentioned on this blog. An open tryout was held a few weeks ago, maybe some kids were encouraged to attend. If that is recruiting, then so be it. All current players have been offered roster spots for next year. End of story. See you guys next Spring. Best of luck to all in their High School seasons.

Anonymous said...

Exactly. Again, I don't care if you do it and even if you did it wouldnt mean they got a spot on the team. The only negative is the sign you are sending current players on your team. I like the way MF plays and I think you are a very good team, just not as good as some on that team think you are.

Anonymous said...

Whatever, it's all about college recruiting now. All of our kids are getting ample opportunity to do that. We have accomplished our main goals and should be in top flights of all showcases next year. I hope every kid, including other teams get to play at the next level if that is what they want. Good luck to all, I really mean that!

Anonymous said...

PDA just one step away from Nationals.

Anonymous said...

Not the real nationals, right?

Anonymous said...

How many nationals are there?

Anonymous said...

It's real. SSC won it last year.

Anonymous said...

It is real and some good teas get to go.

Anonymous said...

Only bogus because you can simply play in a mid level tournament and if you win go to nationals. Smells wrong.

Anonymous said...

Actually you don't even have to win. Blues going to nationals

Anonymous said...

Happy 4th to all.

Anonymous said...

NYC Cup has a good number of colleges attending. My team is not playing. Anyone need a guest player?

Anonymous said...

Us club is the real nationals.. We all play most of our games and tournaments under us club cards..the other nationals have a ton of mickey mouse rules with sub par leagues and nobody uses their cards but to qualify for state cup under meaningless games. Who ever uses their cards for tournaments where you have to ask permission to travel. The academies only use us club cards and they are above both nationals.. Odp which is under NJ youth soccer is a Joke they charge parents almost $2000 a year for subpar competition..in the future us club will be the only tournament that most teams will want to attend.. Not the other mickey mouse nationals..

Anonymous said...

You are wrong but let me tell you why. At the beginning of the US club tournament you provide a roster. Throughout the tournament you can change your roster as much as you like. Now, you win and go to Nationals. You can now add more players to your roster. US Club allows you to add players because you already had tryouts and some were cut and others added. By the time you get to nationals you can have a completely different team. Even if they are not added to your roster you can bring them as guest players. That's right, guest players at Nationals. Stupid.

Anonymous said...

Yeah don't be silly, 1:43. Look at the ranking of the teams involved and it will tell you all you need to know. Anybody can apply to the regionals and "guest up". Have fun in Indiana but please, anyone can sign up.

Anonymous said...

Anybody hear anything about the new EDP Super Club model for next year?

Anonymous said...

No but why would that surprise anyone. Just keep coming up with new names and charge more.

Anonymous said...

All of the teams in the USYS Nationals would beat the teams playing in the Club final rather easily. Just look at the process to get to the finals... The NPL teams are decent sides, but PF, Loudoun, Celtic are on a different level.

Anonymous said...

Totally correct. And the CA and AZ teams. Even higher level.

Anonymous said...

It's obvious from your tone that you're the clueless guy that anonymously talks trash... look at the National League results and see how this U.S. Club team did against the USYS top west coast competition (Albion, Surf or Pateadores) or just look at the NYC team that is average on a good day did all year. (Hint: they do very poorly... Like 0 wins between the 2 poor.)

Anonymous said...

SDFC beat MF today 4-1. What happened MF? You lost both games at the showcase.

Anonymous said...

Yooooo truuu

Anonymous said...

SDFC tuning up for Nationals where they will play 3 of the most talented teams in the country and try to get to a National Championship. While MF is finishing out a season where they missed qualifying for that tournament by an incredibly slim margin so are probably not as sharp. The result makes sense when you take context into account. The top 3 NJ, MD, PA and VA sides can all beat each other on any given day... even Barcelona lose several games a year. Chill and just enjoy a really fun and competitive age group.

Anonymous said...

seriously -- chill. Teams win and lose. Look at the results over a season of play. Every time a top team loses...someone here asks what happened. Stupid question and an even worse way to follow and evaluate soccer.

Anonymous said...

MF puts a target on their backs because they brag so much about how fantastic they are. They really need to come down to earth. They enjoyed crushing Boca Shore 7-0 and then boasting to everyone about it. Everyone knows Boca is not a top team. MF won. No surprise to anyone . Now MF had a big loss to top team but no one is supposed to notice.

Anonymous said...

Mf > Barcelona

Anonymous said...

New players create new problems

Anonymous said...

What's the problem?

Anonymous said...

New ways to work together was meant.

Anonymous said...

Yup. Looks like MF checked out at NYC Cup. Nice tune up for SDFC for Nationals after a tough Spring. Good luck SDFC, make NJ proud!

Anonymous said...

How do 16 year old boys "check out"? There has to be a different reason. Missing players etc.

Anonymous said...

They don't check out.

Anonymous said...

After playing for awhile with a lot on the line, it is tough to get up for a tournament that just doesn't matter. They are a great team, this tournament meant nothing at the end of a very good Season.

Anonymous said...

I would think that the players would want to impress college coaches. What is more important for kids who want to play in college?

Anonymous said...

@4.53
It sounds like you agree that MF checked out, See you nest spring.

Anonymous said...

Again. Kids don't check out. Not kids at their level.

Anonymous said...

Burned out maybe?

Anonymous said...

Perhaps, but those scores show something worse. Missing players? New players not up to the same level?

Anonymous said...

HS soccer on the way. Any teams that are supposed to be tops this year?

Anonymous said...

St. Benedict's. Always #1. All of their academy players seem to get a special allowance to play high school.

Anonymous said...

NYRB 4 - Chelsea 2. Looks like even the very best can check out.

Anonymous said...

MF now comparing themselves to Chelsea. To continue the comparison are you saying that you didnt bring your top players?

Anonymous said...

Have to exclude St. B, cheating the system wont count.
Harrison will be very good this year.

Anonymous said...

Harrison just lost to Cliffside Park in the Bergen's Best summer tournament, and CLiffside Park is not the same team as in the past years. So how good is really Harrison???

Anonymous said...

Isn't Ranney supposed to be pretty good this year?

Anonymous said...

Gill St Bernards and Princeton should be a top team

Anonymous said...

7:56, how in the world can you transfer that onto MF? Get over it, it's time for you to move on.

Anonymous said...

Has Ranney ever done anything in soccer? Seriously, I am just asking...

Anonymous said...

Where is Ranney even at? Why are we talking about Ranney?
