And the top girls soccer HS are:?
Most HS programs are sub par, but fortunately in NJ there are some good HS teams who try to play good soccer and are fun to watch. While most are private schools ( St Benedicts, Pingry, Delbarton, Montclair-Kimberly, Gill St Bernards, Seton Hall Prep, Christian Brothers Academy, Trenton Catholic, just to name a few), there are some pretty good public school programs ( Scotch Plains, Princeton, Bridgewater, Harrison,Kearny, Clifton, Shawnee,Rancocas Valley etc). I am sure their parents will come on here once season starts, and my apologies if I omitted some good programs in above lists. Was just rattling some off the top of my head, and am more familiar with north than south jersey.
Just found the blogJune 19....Good luck on your son making the Academy team. I hope your son is not on my sons HS team with that attitude. My son is mature enough to accept the differences between HS and club and does not find it necessary to compare the quality. He sees them as 2 different animals and doesn't feel the need to broadcast "how good he is". He likes to play with his buddies and compare his HS team to other HS teams and let the standard of play between schools be compared on a level playing field. He knows he cant compare his HS team with club. Truth be told, there are times he has more fun playing HS. But that is just his opinion, what does he know. He is just a kid.
1st time poster on this so no flames please. My child enjoyed MS ball. They just played. Coach knew his limitations(coaches a different sport very well) and let the kids play. They had fun. Hoping the same thing comes with HS ball,Good Luck to all the players!
My son's HS cut down their tryouts hours from 12 down to 6, and they are including multiple fitness tests. How many hours are your child's HS tryouts?
Kearney girls traveling South to Maryland for a pair of scrimmages in Baltimore area of two power house private schools. What is Kearney's reputation the last year or two ?
1.5 hours 2x a week for now. starts 1.5 every day(M-F) at the end of next week.even if Kearney is spectacular, why go to Baltimore? Seems like a waste on money and time. Lenape one of the best in the state and in south jersey.
Lots of great teams in NJ. Kearney not even a top 5 in NJ. I guess they are traveling to McDonogh HS a top 10 every year Nationally in girls soccer ?
ok, lots of girl chatter, any boy chatter.Anyones son make Varsity at a school? If so private or public and what size?My son only playing frosh as a group 4 public. competitive program. He just couldn't handle the physical aspect of tryouts...at 5ft 2.was hoping for JV but will have to watch some very painful frosh..although it will be better for him to be the guy
I think you will soon find out that although it is better to be chosen to play JV as a freshman, the better soccer will be played on the freshman field. You need to stand out, really stand out, to be picked to play JV or Varsity as a freshman so the coaches go into the tryouts thinking that all freshman will stay there. The JV team consists of mostly sophomore castoffs and junior really never did anythings. The key is to do well in Freshman or JV games and the coach will bring you up to a couple Varsity games if he is a good coach. I don't know the HS your son goes to but I would bet that there are 5-6 players on the varsity squad that aren't good at all, just have been around the program and are upper classmen.
There is no roster limit so yes some pretty poor bench varsity players. I think the sophs are actually quite good but I bet only 1 or 2 make varsity. Our school is made up of jr and seniors usually 1 or 2 frosh and soph..Anyone have a feel for their varsity breakdown.
Every school is different. You should not have only 1 or 2 sophomores on Varsity, that isn't a good sign at all. You should have Freshman playing JV that are better than the sophomores and Jrs.
My son's hs team graduated 12 seniors last year, eight starters. It is a major rebuilding year for a team that won sectional final and lost in state final. As many as seven good frosh. will make varsity and three could start. The ninth graders are all good quality players.
If you are a top player, no way you should be playing JV as a sophomore.
Every school is different. To play Varsity as a freshman could mean a lot if you are at a big school with a heavy load of upper classmen. It doesn't say much if you are at a small school. It is all relative.
Every school is definitely different. Last year there were 17 seniors on the varsity team, half of which were pity choices. This year, there are 7 seniors, a lot of juniors but no junior goalie, and suddenly 7 sophomores when there were only two last year. The only kid who made varsity my son's freshman year knew the coach previously. The only sophomores to make varsity the next year were that kid and one other. The JV coach dumped three freshman onto varsity, and none got any playing time. This year's varsity looks a lot like last year's JV which won the counties, but there are two previous varsity who are decent. Might have a chance to win some games for a change. All because of the numbers. JV this year is horrible, freshman is unbelievably bad (after being undefeated my son's freshman year). You have to be kidding about 5'2"; the freshman team is mostly under 5' at my son's school. They are hung up on height at his school, he is now 5'7" and average for the varsity team, but was "too small" last year and the year before as was the other JV player who had double digit goals and assists as well.Only other option is an academy team that has rejects from not that good club teams. Why pay for academy if your teammates stink?
It is HS soccer guys. Coaches don't really know much for the most part, they are teachers earning extra money. Players are picked based on older siblings, year in school and size. Don't take it too seriously and hope your son/daughter doesn't get hurt.
The above may be true for most high school programs but there are some excellent club/academy coaches who double and do HS teams as well. Those are the high school teams who actually try to play good soccer.
My older son plays for Central and I can say that I doubt any SSC players are starting on that team. 1 or 2 might be off the bench but I doubt that are physical enough to compete.Overall it is pretty good soccer in most of the games. However I can see smaller schools putting on some bad displays.
agree, where your kid plays determines what their chances for varsity are.my niece's school only allows freshman to play freshman. no exceptions. they are a regional school. my daughter's school, only the best freshman get on varsity.a friend was bragging how his daughter made varsity as a freshman. my daughter's class has more students than his daughter's entire school. they don't have enough for a freshman team.
relating to August 22, 2013 at 3:44 PMsame for my daughter's HS team. there are only two player that play high level(ECNL/MAPS). the rest are JAGS national and MOSA premier at best. they just don't possess the quickness and physical play required to play against 17, 18, and sometimes 19 year olds.
Just in case poster cares. NJ Kearney HS girls that went South to play in Maryland got blasted 6-Oon Saturday.
Kearney actually travelled to DC area, not Baltimore, and scrimmaged two schools from Washington Catholic Athletic Conference: Bishop O'Connell in Arlington, VA, and Good Counsel in Olney, MD. Both schools frequently ranked nationally; Good Counsel spent all of 2012 in NSCAA top 5.Saturday's score notwithstanding, a good trip with plenty of valuable experience (and a few injuries) for Kearney.
I am sure they could have been beaten 6-0 and still gotten good experience and injuries by not leaving NJ.
That 2012 Good Counsel team lost all their 6 Seniors to D1- Someone said that most all Seniors the last five years have gotten scholarships? Harvard,VA Tech, Duke, Louisville, Brown, Michigan What clubs feed into Good Counsel?Looks like it is close to SAC in Columbia?
there are a bunch of great clubs within driving distance in that area. Fredrick, VSA, PW and louden. So they had 6 seniors that played at the highest level, they should beat a team from most NJ public high schools 6-0. let's also look at the tuition for this school. 18k. money is not an issue for these kids.
There is some hope for HS soccer! Actually saw some good boys high school soccer yesterday at Ridge HS. Three team tri-scrimmage and all three were actually pretty good. Seton Hall Prep, Gill St Bernards, and host Ridge HS
@6:49, none of the clubs you mention is relevant. Three are in NoVa (nobody commutes from PW/Loudoun counties to Olney for school), and FC Frederick isn't really that strong.Good Counsel is, however, fortunate to draw players from a number of highly successful teams across Montgomery and Howard Counties.Last year's class went to play at Harvard, Davidson, George Mason, Va Tech, and Louisville. All D1, but not necessarily traditional national powerhouse programs. The sixth player chose not to play college soccer. The current team has players from MD United (fka Freestate), Premier SC, Bethesda, MSC, MD Rush, and Thunder SC. Three of the most successful girls' teams in MD history are represented by multiple player each. A quarter of the roster play for club teams that have won National League and played in National Championship matches. Roughly half the team has made National and/or ODP Regional teams. With that to draw from, very few public schools anywhere are able to compete with them, although Bethesda's Whitman and B-CC do pretty well. And there are a handful of other private schools in the Washington and Baltimore areas that definitely challenge them: McDonough, O'Connell, St. John's, to name a few.FYI, GC tuition is on the low end of Washington-area private schools (which often top $30K).Bottom line for this discussion: the scrimmage against Kearney, while producing a lopsided score, was quite valuable for both sides. Playing someone you have never seen before is generally beneficial, especially with a team that is preparing for a very tough schedule while working four sophomores and one freshman into the starting lineup to replace all those seniors from a year ago.
? Do not think many students coming from VA to Good Counsel. Drive the Washington Beltway much? The great players are coming from The Columbia area. SAC,Bays, FreeState(MARYLAND UNITED)now.
Come join the Rutgers Men’s Soccer Team at Yurcak Field on Busch Campus in Piscataway, NJ Friday, September 6th 2013 as they try to break the home attendance record. All fans will receive a Rutgers “R” Magnet and the first 2,000 fans will receive Rutgers Men’s Soccer Posters!
okay so they are on the poor end of rich people. feel bad for them, LOL
Why do you automatically assume that people who sen their kids to a Catholic school are rich? There are any number if Catholic school students, at GC and elsewhere in the DC area, for whom the tuition is a significant financial burden. Nevertheless, they deem it important enough to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve an important educational goal for their child(ren).
Come down off your high righteous horse. He was just joking with you.
1:55 you are correct. there are many people who truly go without for their children's HS education. no one can choose private HS over paying the mortgage. if you are choosing HS and elite teams over big vacations, expensive cars and a huge house(s), especially with multiple children, you are rich but are investing in your child's future. it's okay to be rich! LOL
My son is skipping HS soccer and doing cross country. Too many kids already injured in practices and tryouts. Coach's focus is not have his school records broken, so he cut the best player. I guess D1 college coaches must be wrong, and a walk-on who quit college soccer after one year at a small D3 school must be right.
Krystal Ball's boys soccer Pre season top 10:1: St Benedicts2: Pingry3: Delbarton4: Ramapo5: Pennington6: Seton Hall Prep7: Princeton8: MKA9: Scotch Plains10: Gill just my humble limited opinion/ anyone else know some good teams to add ?
hs soccer experience varries greatly from school to school.
GL will likely beat Scotch Plains this year. Their JV was outstanding last year, and they have nowhere to go but up.
Krystal Ball are you high, Gill in the top 10? Gill wouldn't beat Bridgewater, Hunterdon Central, North Hunterdon, Watchung, Hillsboro, Montgomery, Princeton and about a kazillion others
7:34, how do you know. This is HS soccer and the players change every year.
Some good girls matchups at the McDonough Invitational outside Baltimore this weekend involving Maria Carillo (CA), North Highlands and Pennington (NJ), McDonough, Good Counsel, River Hill, and B-CC (MD), O'Connell and Ireton (VA).
from/to what dates does the hs coaches get paid?did you ever heard of a hs NOT letting 1st and 2nd year students be a part of varsity?I would say that 8 out of 10 kids rather play competitive club soccer all year around then hs.Let Gov. Christie take a look at hs coaches. A waste of money goes into majority of these guys. Take pride and do your job that you getting good money for.
Too bad coaches don't change.
7 34 you mentioned some good teams there, but gill can play with any of them, including your kazilion others.
Gill parent is full of himself. Thinks he is the manager or something
Nothing wrong with a gill parent or parent of any school for that matter, being proud of their kids school team. What was wrong was you putting that school's team down in the first place. Don't have a dog in this fight, but now instead of being a neutral, I'd be rooting for gill against your school.
How does the Delaware Conference look this year.I have seen Pingry, and Watchung Hills play. Watchung looks like a team to beat. Many players on team play on same club team. they attack and have great first and last touch.Pingry while they won their first two games I don't think they will go thru Delaware undefeated as in previous seasons. They will have to improve as season goes on.Any insight into other teams?
Wachung hills wins again against an always tough BW. BW has two tough losses, seems they will have trouble finding the net this year.
Both North and Central should be competitive this year.
North 9-6Central 10-5Swing games for both are BW, Wachung, Pingry, Hillsboro..Central needs to be above .500North need at least 2 wins from those teams
please do not write the meaning of this abbreviation. it was written in a "motivational" note from some captains to their team. Please do not name the team(s) if you are aware of this. I am curious what the general is opinion on what should be done, if anything.this was posted in a note on a social media. it was a really great note until the last line which read: "let's FTBU tonight! and make them sorry they stepped on our field".the game was VERY physical. the teams were equal in skill. in the 2nd half it was obvious that our team had sunk to the level of the opposing team out of frustration and began retaliating. not right but I don't know how long I could be punched, pinched and pulled on before I would fight back. the Referees were again, useless! should this be:left alone?sent to the coach(es)sent to their athletic director?another option?we see time and time again how too many kids get hurt playing HS soccer. it just seems wrong for me not to speak up about it.
Watchung has a couple good results to start off the season. Just curious, what club(s) do thier guys play on ?
In response to 4:48PM, it is the responsibility of the coach(s) to ensure that their players are playing hard but clean. Yes the Refs need to keep control from the beginning of the game, but a coach can see what is going on and they should absolutely pull the reins in if yellow cards are flying. What should you do. If it was blatant I would talk to your coach and get his perspective..is this an ongoing yearly issue with this team..therefore the coach...does the coach have a relationship and has he communicated with the opposition? Try to get ot the bottom but at the end of the day, your son is a big boy now and you need to let him grow on his own...there was plenty of dirty games when I played 30 years ago and I as well as many other got thru it...
central over pingry 1 nil...first loss for pingry in their conference play in 2 years.
Cards, that's funny. no cards were ever shown. REF sent one player off the field and it wasn't even the correct player.
With Pingry showing a chinck in their armor, it should make both the SCT and Delaware div very interesting this year.
can someone please explain HS soccer to me? looking at NJ.com HS standings because I have nothing better to do on a Friday night. Central Jersey Group 4 standings. our kids play 2 teams listed there twice and 2 teams once.3 teams not listed there they will play 2x each.how can you have a group standings when you never play 16 of the teams listed?
No answer to 8:13 pm?
just fictitious standings based on power points; used only to seed the state tournament groups near end of season. means nothing now.
okay so where are any standings that DO count found?
The only standings that really count is where you stand in your county brackets for the championship. Realistically that is the most important event for h.s. teams, beside the states for those that have high quality teams. The county standings/brackets are voted on by the coaches in the county prior to start of tournament.
What do you think of upcoming county tournaments? some preliminary rounds started already.Any predictions?
NJ.com shows every county except ocean for stat leaders/tournament. Ocean barely gets game results listed. is there somewhere else they post ocean?
Asbury Park Press or Philadelphia Inquirer?
this new backround stinks, as you can't even see anything. way to go and kill a site
I agree. The image is the wrong size for repeating and the effect is a definite downgrade in both design and usability.
So what is the point of posting saves on NJ.com if you don't post GA? keeping stats of 200+ saves so far this season?what does that tell you?
A lot of it is goalies on bad teams and they have no choice but to try and stop 30 shots a game
saving 30 shots a game would be a great GA % for a awesome keeper on a crappy team. missing too many would show that the keeper is crappy too.seems like another "everyone gets a trophy kinda thing". thought this would end in HS. LOL
Scotch Plains lost to a terrible Union County foe. What does being #7 in the state mean if a terrible team can beat you? Or is it that the top teams are one-horse wonders?
Can someone tell me high school soccer how many games (or halfs) is a player aloud to play all the way thru state tournaments?? Isn't it like 35 or 37 halfs in ohio
i heard 3 halves in a day in NJ
change the backround! It stinks, can't see anything ! What is it? Your daughter's team ?

You guys need to realize that stats on NJ.com are often from the coach, unless the game is a "big game". I know that because I asked someone why my son's team's stats were not posted, not who scored goals and no saves. The HS varsity coach does not report the stats to the paper when they ask. The other teams all do and they have correct stats more or less.
some coaches don't even post rosters. it's sad they don't take the time. some coaches only report their side of the stats. my kid is a GK. the saves posted are normally right by my count(give or take a few here and there).
