The Eastern PA ODP tryouts finish up this Sunday. I'm wondering how many girls in the 2002 and 2003 age group will continue to do ODP? Many in this group are on high level club teams where the competition at club practice is better than ODP competition.

What is everyone thinking with this?

How is NJ ODP?

Anonymous said...

With respect to EPYSA ODP, representation in each age group differs somewhat by club, but all the top teams have some level of participation. You will find ECNL players along with players that might be on teams that compete on a level not much higher than rec, which is good. Not all of the talented kids have the time and other resources to devote to ECNL level play, but may be just as good or better than ECNL players, so ODP provides a platform for them to be seen. Players do tend to fall away from ODP at the upper age groups as they lock in commitments or focus on other pursuits to the point that ODP is not a benefit. Unlike NJ or MD, I like that EPA posts the names of the players. I think this helps in the recognition process and I don't think that it is much of a security concern. It is no different than a GotSoccer roster, and in fact, the final teams will appear on GotSoccer anyway.

Anonymous said...

11:28 no disrespect with this post, i agree with most of it. Just have one question. When you say ECNL players, are you saying the players that also do id2 camps or the ones that were not identified for id2 camps? There is a little bit of a difference.

Anonymous said...

7:26 - I do not have that level of knowledge or information. I just have some information about the club teams for which the various ODP participants play.

PAE ODP Results/Team Rosters are now posted on the EPYSA website

I have older kids who have been doing ODP for a long time. The region 1 team is totally worthwhile. What we have seen was pretty much all of the top players playing at 12-13. Then a drop off of the national players after the first u14 camp. I know at least one in my child's age that was identified for national camp through ODP. Then the regional team started up. Took a huge pool at u13 (now there is a u13 interregional team so its a little different. Probably backed up because of the more prevalent early recruiting) kept many interested for U14. However after many in the pool at u13 didn't get selected for the much smaller u14 pool or the u14 interregional team, a lot of good but not great kids stopped participating. Some new kids popped in at u15 who were good but not great. they made the team more competitive but then they either committed or didn't make the region1 team and dropped off similarly. New kids this year. In general the region 1 team/pool kids tend to stay interested until they commit. The kids coming from weak club teams see it as an opportunity to play with and against stiffer competition. Increasing presence from the Pocono and central PA areas where its harder to play for an ECNL team.

I have a U12 G player who was recently chosen for an ODP Ttraining team. She was only in for last few sessions and is expecting to earn a spot.. I am totally lost and think I am in way over my head. She is great in my eyes and gets lots of compliments on her skill level at such a young age. (She is some keeper for her club team) she hs guest played at ECNL U13 games and most recently At a U12 Boys game. What is the likely hood of her getting picked?? How many keepers are kept for 03's? We are in northern VA.

Is ODP just as expensive as ECNL?
Have any of you gotten sponsorships for your players?

Thanks

Anonymous said...

In my opinion, one cannot compare ODP and ECNL because they are two entirely different programs. On the whole, ODP would be less expensive, but the product is different. ODP is training focused with a certain amount of opportunity to mix and compare with players from other clubs and areas. ECNL is club and competition focused, which of course comes with training. ODP is more of a supplement program to a primary club experience. Finding the right team for a GK is difficult. On one hand you do not want the GK on a very good team where the GK never sees any shots. On the other hand it can be demoralizing for a GK to be constantly peppered with shots and ultimately goals. Often, a GK may need to play on two teams, one where she can see fewer, but higher quality shots; and the other where she can see quantity. One bonus of playing on a higher level team is that the GK can be incorporated into the attack and actively coordinate the defense because the players tend to know more about how to work with the GK at a higher level. As far as funding, ODP does offer scholarships, and some ECNL teams may offer grants. However, time and travel are the bigger expenses at the ECNL level. You are fortunate to have many options for teams in NOVA. You should find a club that has a good GK training program. Not all do, and often the GK just ends up being a target for the field players without receiving any individual specialty instruction. That is why many GKs end up going to a separate GK trainer, which usually adds another training day or two to the week and more expense. I recommend you review the websites of some of the local teams to see what they offer for GKs and try and speak to some of the contacts. You need to shop around. The U14 blog has some good discussions about the pros and cons of ECNL, NPL, USYS, etc.

Opinions/insight needed please!
My U15 was selected to ODP this year. We thought this was quite an accomplishment since this was her goal for the past year. She trained, developed and worked hard to improve from where she was one year, and two years ago (she never had any actual travel training/development until U13 and Super-Y). She has made a lot of effort to talk to her club coaches about what her goals are and where she wants to be in terms of advancing her game and her placement on a higher level team within the club, especially since she has out-paced her current team placement development-wise (it is technically a B-team). And she has put in the work. Playing up with an A-team older age group and with ODP has been giving her the challenge she needs and wants, as she is very frustrated. Not to mention that the attitude and goals of the B-team players (and their parents) are not in line with what she wants to accomplish, such as: going to every soccer practice, training on her own, going to college showcase tournaments, playing college soccer...

Previously, the coaches were very supportive of her, giving her advice and encouragement. A couple of the coaches have asked her why she hasn't been promoted to the A-team, or even asked to guest-play or join their practices, and seemed surprised that she hasn't. Nonetheless, they encouraged her to keep improving saying she will get noticed, scouts will start coming out, etc., etc.,......but suddenly the tides have turned. When she asked to be placed on the older A-team - which she was invited to practice and play games with - because she felt it suited her needs better, the coaches got all "weird" and have started discouraging her from pursuing a higher level. Where she was told that scouts will be coming out to see her, now she's told that she's just a freshman and she's jumping the gun, ODP isn't that important, she should skip ODP events to attend a recreational "just for fun" tournament with the B-team, and she's being selfish to want to leave the B-team in pursuit of her own development, that she should stay behind and help the weaker players get better......this sends up red flags for me.

WHAT AM I MISSING HERE? WHAT IS THIS ABOUT? Why would the same coaches that encouraged her before turn around and discourage her now? Isn't this supposed to be about player development? I'm not paying thousands of dollars per year for my daughter to stagnate on a weak team so she can help develop her weaker team mates. I am paying for the club to develop HER, which is the first line of their mission statement! And why would they poo-poo ODP when they push the A-team players to be in ODP? And BTW, the club isn't ECNL, it's CCL and WAGS, if that matters.

Please advise, I am at a loss.

Anonymous said...

What I feel like is that the club/coaches have identified who they want to develop and all "the others" are just the bread-and-butter financial support for the club.

Anonymous said...

If your daughter is in CCL and WAGS, then she certainly has access to a number of different clubs where she could play. Use ODP as a means to network, from both the parent and player perspective. Casually talk to other parents to find out things that are happening, but do not be a soccer know-it-all or wanna-be. Your daughter should try to make friends with the other players and interact with the coaches. Essentially, the same skills that need to be developed to find a job and have a successful career often need to be used to find the right soccer fit.

Anonymous said...

Is your opinion that the only recourse is to change clubs? She doesn't want to change clubs, and has always been very fond of her coaches there. It is just surprising that they would collude to hold her back. Why would coaches want to hold a player back rather than developing her full potential, and discourage her from pursuing the next level?

Anonymous said...

Promoting one player often means demoting another. Coaches may be reluctant to demote for many reasons. My daughter's team has been together since U9 with very little change, with the exception of roster expansion for 11v11. My daughter was a "B" team player and had to wait a number of years until finally being promoted to the "A" team. At that, she has never really been accepted into the team chemistry because she has a stigma of having been a "B" team player in the early years. Many of her "B" teammates have only moved up by moving out. One was in a situation similar to your daughter's, ODP and all of that, but wasn't being placed on the "A" team. My daughter had an "A" team offer on the table from another club when she received the invitation to move up to her club's "A" team. Just like in the business world, sometimes you need to switch employers to advance, or show that others are interested in your talents before your talents are truly appreciated.

Anonymous said...

10:03am&12:07pm -- I don't know if you'll ever know why her coaches have changed their approach with her without asking them directly, and I don't know that you'll even get a good answer even if you do ask them. It could even be that the coaches are feeling pressure from other parents complaining that she was being given opportunities that others weren't, and they've decided to take away her opportunities rather than open those same opportunities to lower-level players. If you're getting a weird vibe, I'd trust that feeling and start thinking about making a move after the spring. Since you said you're at a CCL club, you won't be able to move to another CCL club, which would limit your options.

A club that is truly about development would not hold a player back that was looking for ways to improve, or they should not hold her back without a discussion about the reasoning behind it.

Anonymous said...

Nov 12 8:18pm -- VA will keep a larger player pool for the 03s for State ODP, maybe 10 or so keepers? It varies every year and depends on quality. If she's getting good feedback from her coaches and has a good work rate in training, she's probably likely to be selected.

ODP will have a training fee for the State and the tournaments and camp will have separate fees.

So, youth soccer development and ODP isn't about developing players to their fullest potential? I have to complain and whine to coaches for my kid to get a fair shot at reaching potential because I am actually competing against other whiny complaining parents? Individual merit, skills, work ethics, motivation, character....that means nothing?

Anonymous said...

Exactamundo!

Anonymous said...

Individual merit, skills, work ethics, motivation, character all do mean something and clubs/ODP should be about that ... most of them are in my experience. PP said her daughter is CCL/WAGS, so she is in Northern VA, which is the hotbed of tiger parents who jockey for position and do whatever they can to give their kid a leg up. Her club seemed to be doing the right thing, until they weren't with no explanation. So, being in NOVA, the parents could be in play more than they should be, and she should start shopping.

My son is in the second day of Va State ODP tryouts for 2003's (U13). We have never done ODP before, can anyone tell me roughly how many make the State team for Virgiania each year?

Anonymous said...

For U13 it should be around 60 players, including keepers

Anonymous said...

2003 in NJ they take 75 ish
2002 in NJ they take 50
2001 in NJ they take 25

Anonymous said...

I believe that VYSA State ODP squad will consist of 3 teams of approximately 20 players, including around 2 GKs.

VYSA State selections will be announced no later than 5pm Thursday, December 10th, 2015.

VYSA pools are posted already!

Anonymous said...

VYSA ODP selections are a joke. Most, if not all, of players have already been chosen. During the tryout process the coaches barely even watch the kids that are working hard to make a team. I'm really disappointed with level of professionalism, we will not be spending our money on this again next year.

Anonymous said...

Agree.....VYSA got a lot wrong this year. WOW. I wonder if the coaches realize their selection process lacks accuracy and integrity. I was told there was selections made of a CCL team's 2nd tier substitute, but non-selects of that CCL team's starters and captains (from the same team)? This suggest a lot, the least of which is the VYSA assessment process is completely broken. If its true what you write - coaches barely watched - that's a sin. As a coach, I have always believed I should have to be able to give tangible reasons for not selecting a player. And, be able to give reasons why that player was both chosen, or, not chosen for the team. AND, provide that to the player. If this is not happening, perhaps this is why ODP has lost a lot of its once enjoyed prestige over the last decade?

Anonymous said...

For the VYSA pools, which age group are you talking about?

Anonymous said...

MSYSA ODP (Maryland) was also questionable this year. Most of the players selected for final call backs would not even be attending this session because they are away at Super Y finals in Florida. Where is the transparency in which players do make the final "cut" when some would not even be attending but still more than likely be on the final roster?

During the sessions, some of the kids wore pennies which covered their jersey numbers, so how does that work? It is clear club coaches, who are also part of the ODP staff, are getting their B level players to move to the next level. Session evaluators can be seen writing on their clip boards and potentially not paying attention to what the players are doing to give a true evaluation. There is so much wrong with this program it seems, with so much politics taking place, not to mention is it a business after all right.

Anonymous said...

....to the person who asked what age group for VYSA. Boys 02.

Anonymous said...

This all happened on the girls side as well. The evaluators just picked players from their own team/club. Maybe that is why they don't post the players home club anymore. Best way to make ODP in VA is to play for the club of the evaluators.

Anonymous said...

My daughter made the VYSA ODP State Team. We have not yet committed... She was under a lot of pressure and had 5 coaches watching Her at the end of the last day. I do believe they have their eyes on certain players.. I am now interested to see exactly what CLINS the kids and coaches are from. I thought ODP was a privilege..

Anonymous said...

My daughter has done VYSA ODP for 4 years now and no coaches from her club are involved. Most of the players she is with don't have a club coach involved with ODP.

I will say there is one club on the girls side that seems to be able to push players into the State pool that are questionable, but I don't see that overall. That club's players don't get selected for the Regional level.

1:14 - Which gender/age group do you reference with respect to the oddity. I have heard of a similar call back issue, and would like to know if it is the same issue and perhaps isolated, or if there are more instances than the one you note.

Anonymous said...

Maryland ODP is broken. There were many girls who made call backs and were unable to attend the session because of the Super-Y Finals in Florida. Out of the girls who were at the Super-Y Finals, a good majority of those girls still made the team while a few others did not.

Also, you could obviously tell they had their minds made up going into the second day of tryouts. The first session they had at least 4 or 5 coaches evaluating the session. On the second day there were 2 coach evaluating and as mentioned above, a good bit of those players had pennies on and there was no way of telling what their number was. To top it all off, on the second day of tryouts there was one group playing in the middle of the field with absolutely ZERO coaches evaulating. This is completely unacceptable. Their method of evaulating players is completely broken. Playing scrimmages for an hour an half and evaluating doesn't work. There are some players out there who barely touched the ball during the scrimmages. I highly doubt the MSYSA ODP evaluators look at the entire field and watch how players move off the ball or read the game with a higher soccer IQ than others. They only seem to know how to spot the kids who are fast and tall.

Please note, I'm not bitter because my child did make it. However, I know of many deserving and well qualified players who did not. While other players who lack the IQ and technical skill got passed over for faster, bigger girls. It was noted during ODP last year that a certain girls coach said he only wants faster, taller players and if the other players it was their job to displace the faster, taller players even though it was noted that those players were not as skilled. The process is broken and needs fixed!

Anonymous said...

11:38am - I concur. On the day of call backs, a full practice squad wore pennies even though they were playing with the gray shirts squad. Also the format during the week day sessions were totally different from the weekend, and with some different coaches.

There is only one sure fire way to get on the MD ODP pool: get on a club team with a coach who is also an ODP staffer, even though he/she may be coaching another age group. They all have the potential for doing "favors" for each other, due to coaches picks, to accommodate players of their choice. I know this for a fact, as it worked like a charm for a lower level division 5 player this year.

Do some home work and you would notice most of the coaching staff all worked with one particular club for some years, which could be classified as a clique. Some are even on the Region 1 coaching staff, which makes for more potential of collusion.

Anonymous said...

I attended the VYSA ODP boys tryouts and have to disagree with some of the negative comments about the selection process. Before the boys even got to the state tryout they had eight practice sessions with their district coaches. That's 18 hours of evaluation with the district coaches. I'm sure the district coaches recommend and rank players to the state coaching staff, but it is my understanding that the district coaches don't select the state pool, the state staff does. This is intended to avoid the appearance of favoritism. I did not see the district coaches at the state tryouts.

At the state tryouts the state staff had 6 hours to observe and evaluate the players. About 30 of the players were on the 2014-2015 state team, so the state coaching staff had good knowledge of these players abilities. Virginia dominated at the regional tournament in June with these players, winning every division they played. So it's completely reasonable that most all of these past players were selected again for the state pool. I could spot a number of them and they were clearly some of the most talented there. The state coaches needed to find another 25 players out of the approximately 90 that were left.

Honestly, it was fairly easy to see them dividing the groups -- good/better/best. The last hour and a half of the tryout you could see the whittling of the field as selected boys were moved in and sometimes out of scrimmage teams with past state team players. My son was one of those who was moved to the team with the some of the past state players and he was also wearing a pinny and they were able to figure out his number. The boys that could hang with the state kids stayed and the ones who couldn't keep up were moved down to other teams.

This is a tryout and it's not surprising that some otherwise talented kids don't always bring their A-game. But the way these tryouts are separated into morning and afternoon sessions over two weekends, helps diminish the impact of one bad session. Regarding the complaint that a CCL 2 player beat out a CCL player, that shouldn't be a shock, as there are many extremely skilled kids in the big Northern Virginia clubs on the B teams. The CCL 2 boy that was referred to earlier was likely playing like his life depended on it and earned a spot. I was watching one of these boys and he deservedly made the team.

I don't know any of the state coaches, none of them are part of my son's club team, nor were the district coaches. My son was selected to the state pool, so the accusations that they play favorites doesn't stand up in my case.

I've found OPD to be a great training opportunity for my son and the state scrimmages a chance for him to showcase his talent.
